Why Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’s Seasons Have Me Intrigued

In case it hasn’t crossed your path yet, yesterday Warner Bros. Games and DC debuted the third and final episode of the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Insider video series, treating fans to a closer look at Rocksteady Studios’ upcoming third-person action-shooter. The developer diary series has given us looks at gameplay and design but this has been the biggest show of how the game will live on after the initial playthrough. Honestly, what they’ve announced has me more interested than anything I’ve seen from the game so far.

As revealed in the above video, to keep the adventure going following the main story-driven campaign, each season will be themed around a different DC character and incorporate alternate realities invaded by Brainiac known as Elseworlds. Starting in March, Season 1 will feature the arrival of The Joker, in the form of a Elseworlds twist on the iconic DC Super-Villain. due to the Arkham-verse Joker being dead for several years at this point. The fact that The Joker is being added isn’t what interested me though – I would have put my mortgage on him being added. Instead, it is the concept and execution behind his addition.

The way the episode frames the new character additions makes it seem like there are considered narratives being told with each addition – akin to how Marvel’s Avengers added new characters. This I love. While new roster additions are always fun, having an evolving story that centres around these additions is much more engaging. In short, this approach makes me care about the world inside the game. If the developers treat it with respect and care, so will I – to a certain extent. We are playing as the Suicide Squad after all.

My biggest fear when joining live service games, and something that still makes it difficult for me to play them today, is that they will be quickly abandoned post-launch. I hate investing in a world, excited to delve into it for some time to come, only to have the rug pulled from under me. If I go into it knowing that there is a finite run, that’s fine. I know beforehand. Sadly, too many of us know the feeling of playing an online game as it limps onward on life support.

This content roadmap has me much more confident that there is some longevity to Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League beyond the initial hype. Especially considering Elseworlds gives them access to any DC villain ever. While I am certain there will be obvious ones, I am fully up for some obscure and ridiculous additions. I’d love to play as Blight from Batman Beyond, for example.

Even better, the first season of added content is free. Yes, free. While I am sure there will be Day 1 microtransactions dripping out of the seams, a sad reality of games these days, at least the first content expansion won’t cost you anything extra. This is a superb way to treat your community, and an even better way to keep them playing your game well after release. Below is a snapshot of free content included in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Season 1, with additional details to be announced at a later date:

  • The Joker as a New Playable Character
  • New Joker-Themed Playable Environment
  • Two Episodes with New Missions, Activities & Strongholds
  • New Boss Fights & Enemy Variants
  • New DC Villain-Themed Weapons & Gear
  • New Riddler Content

Rocksteady also tells us that for future Seasons 2-4, players can look forward to three new playable characters, three new playable environments, new weapons, themed gear sets, activities, mid-season updates, and more. Might this be the rare occasion of a live-service game launching with a planned and road-mapped content strategy beyond the first month? Only time will tell but everything they are saying at the moment has me watching closely as we lead up to the launch date.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be available worldwide on 2 Feb, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam). The Epic Games Store (PC) version be available on 5 March, 2024. To learn more, you can visit SuicideSquadGame.com.
